Zentalis modernizes pharmaceutical research and analytics on AWS with Xpertech

Executive summary

Zentalis modernized its pharmaceutical research and analytics platform by migrating and modernizing critical workloads on Amazon Web Services (AWS). Working with AWS Partner Xpertech, Zentalis implemented a HIPAA-aligned AWS landing zone and migrated a diverse set of research workloads, including data ingestion pipelines, analytics platforms, and machine learning environments. The solution enabled secure, scalable analysis of sensitive research and patient-related data while improving operational resilience and supporting ongoing modernization initiatives.

Customer overview

Zentalis is a clinical-stage pharmaceutical company focused on discovering and developing novel therapies through data-driven research and innovation. The organization supports a wide range of research activities, including clinical data analysis, genomics workflows, and large-scale analytics to support drug development and regulatory requirements.

To scale its research capabilities while maintaining strict regulatory controls, Zentalis sought a secure cloud platform that could support diverse workloads, protect sensitive data, and provide flexibility for advanced analytics and machine learning.

Challenge

Zentalis needed to migrate and modernize an existing research environment that spanned multiple physical and virtual systems, large data volumes, and heterogeneous applications. The environment supported sensitive pharmaceutical research data and patient-related datasets, requiring strong security controls and audit readiness.

At the same time, Zentalis wanted to reduce infrastructure management overhead, improve scalability for compute-intensive analytics, and enable machine learning workflows on large datasets such as genetic sequence data. The organization also required a migration approach that minimized disruption to ongoing research activities while supporting future modernization and growth.

Solution

Xpertech delivered a phased migration and modernization program on AWS, starting with the implementation of a secure, HIPAA-aligned AWS landing zone. The landing zone used a multi-account architecture with centralized logging, encryption by default, and private connectivity to on-premises systems.

Using a wave-based migration approach, Xpertech migrated and modernized a broad range of workloads, selecting appropriate strategies based on application characteristics and business requirements. The environment was built using automation and standardized governance controls to ensure consistency and operational reliability.

Key solution components included:
• HIPAA-aligned AWS landing zone with multi-account isolation, centralized audit logging, encryption at rest and in transit, and policy-based access controls
• Migration of research and application workloads to Amazon EC2 and managed storage services
• Modernization of data platforms using Amazon S3, AWS Glue, and Amazon Athena to support a governed data lake architecture
• Machine learning enablement using Amazon SageMaker for model development, training, and inference on large research datasets
• Secure virtual desktop environments using Amazon WorkSpaces to support researcher access
• Integration of monitoring, backup, and automation services to improve operational visibility and resilience

Results

With the AWS-based platform in place, Zentalis gained a secure and scalable foundation for its pharmaceutical research and analytics workloads. The new environment supports diverse use cases, from data lake analytics to machine learning on genetic sequence data, while maintaining strong governance and compliance controls.

By leveraging managed AWS services and standardized automation, Zentalis reduced operational complexity and improved system reliability. The cloud platform enables research teams to scale compute resources on demand, onboard new datasets more efficiently, and support ongoing modernization without disrupting critical research activities.

Key benefits included:

• Secure migration of sensitive research and patient-related data to AWS
• Improved scalability for analytics and machine learning workloads
• Reduced infrastructure management and operational overhead
• Stronger security governance and audit readiness through centralized controls
• A flexible foundation to support future modernization initiatives

Next steps

Zentalis continues to expand its AWS environment as additional research workloads are migrated and modernized. Ongoing efforts include migrating additional database and application waves, expanding machine learning pipelines, and continuously optimizing cost, security, and performance across the platform.
