UC San Diego’s Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute (ACTRI) and its ENACT program partnered with Xpertech to build one of the nation’s most advanced cloud-based research computing environments. Xpertech deployed a highly secure, air-gapped, HIPAA-compliant AWS Landing Zone designed for ephemeral data enclaves that support multi-institutional research studies involving sensitive biomedical and EMR-derived datasets.

Xpertech modernized ACTRI/ENACT’s research infrastructure using automated data ingestion pipelines, secure S3-based research data lakes, and governed analytics tooling with AWS Lake Formation, Athena, and Glue. Isolated researcher workspaces and Jupyter/SageMaker environments were deployed to enable high-performance analytics and machine learning while enforcing strict confidentiality controls.

This cloud platform enables secure collaboration across institutions, rapid compute scalability, and advanced analytics on protected health data, accelerating scientific discovery in a fully compliant and cost-efficient AWS environment.
